Pulak Halder. Reconnecting at Kumartuli.
Artist Statement: For rest and reflection I go to a place named Kumartuli in Kolkata where artisans gradually turn fistful of straw and a huge mass of clay into perfectly formed larger than life figures of Durga (Hindu Goddess) and other mythological characters. In today’s busy life we are gradually getting alienated from indigenous art and culture, hence I often visit this place to reconnect spiritually. I get inspired by their creative pursuits in the midst of simple way of life. To me spirituality is synonymous to creativity – creation of iconic figures with their unearthly faces.
